It’s not wasting anything if you preheat for a few seconds but i had a battery that did a rainbow cycle for 10 seconds and that smoked so it definitely wasted oil. That's just because a shorter ramp up time also means less juice will evaporate during the ramp up period, and you. Whenever i pre heat i pull in. Prep mode is also super handy to have in colder climates, or when you want to use your pen outside or during an outdoor activity.
